BATW Anthology Winners to Be Announced March 1

Our trio of esteemed judges (Janet Fullwood, John Flinn and Julia Cosgrove) have completed their task. Now, BATW is reviewing the results, which will be announced with BATW’s March 1 website update. Then, get ready to party and celebrate on March 17.

Have you been wanting to learn WordPress and some basic web-design skills? Or perhaps you already have these skills and want a fancy title to go with them? Either way, BATW needs you. The volunteer position of Webmaster is open for 2012. This is not rocket science: You will be trained by our own Dick Jordan and MemberClicks to navigate the inner workings of our website—something you’ll no doubt find useful and possibly fun. Please give back to BATW with a bit of your time for this important job. You do NOT have to attend board meetings to hold this position. Contact Ginny Prior or Carolyn Koenig.

Bay Area Travel & Adventure Show – Feb. 18-19

BATW has formed a partnership, this year, with the Bay Area Travel & Adventure Show, which runs Feb. 18 and 19 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The Travel & Adventure Show is the nation’s largest active and adventure travel show, showcasing worldwide destinations and vacation packages. BATW’s Lee Foster and Jules Older will be presenting a panel discussion on apps at the show, and BATW members are being offered a free pass to the two-day event.

The first 50 members to write to info@prmagic.com will be signed up for one free pass. Please provide your full name, phone number and e-mail address in case they need to get ahold of you for any reason. The deadline to request a pass is Monday, Feb. 13th. Canada’s Northern Lights Awards – Deadline Feb. 7

The race is on for Canada’s Northern Lights Awards presented by the Canadian Tourism Commission and sponsored by Travel Alberta. Through compelling headlines, stunning imagery and riveting descriptions, thousands of writers, photographers, producers and other media tell Canada’s story around the world. This is our chance to recognize your work as being one of the most influential and important motivators for all travellers.

Travel and lifestyle media including print, online, photography and broadcast can vie for top journalism awards judged by the Missouri School of Journalism.

New! Two Broadcast/video awards will be judged by a panel of professional multi-media experts.

New! Entrants may now enter electronically (see link below). A printable PDF file is also available should you wish to enter by mail (see link below).

Prizes will be artwork created by Canadian artists. Winners will be invited to accept their award at Canada Media Marketplace in San Francisco on April 3, 2012.

New! There will be 5 categories. Entrants may submit up to 3 pieces in each of the categories. Two prizes will be awarded per category.

Print (magazine, newspaper) – First and Second Prize

Eligibility & Rules

Eligibility:

Eligible for entry is work produced in English or French by American and Canadian journalists between Jan. 1, 2011 and Dec. 31, 2011. All entries must be on Canada and deal with the subject of travel/lifestyle or the business of tourism. Advertorials are not eligible. Up to three (3) entries per publication/author/photographer/broadcaster/online video producer will be considered; more than three will disqualify all entries. Multiple bylines are acceptable. Just one prize is given per award category.

Rules:

Entries for the competition must be filed either electronically or by mail no later than February 7, 2012. Mail-in submissions must be post-dated no later than Feb. 7, 2012.
Print, photography and online entry attachments must have clear, readable dates of publication. Blogs must have been live during 2011 to qualify for award entry.
Broadcast television and online video must provide script and link to video required for judging.
Advertorials are not eligible.
No entries will be returned
Up to 3 entries per journalist/publication/author/photographer/television or video producer will be considered. More than 3 entries will disqualify all entries.

From pre-trip planning, fishing for details and story ideas while on the road, to crafting a well-told tale—whether for publication, friends and family, or your own pleasure and memories—we’ll work together to share ideas regarding travel and writing, workshop our writing, and enjoy turning our adventures into stories.

It’s that time of year again. By now, all members should have gotten their renewal notices for 2012–deadline is December 15 (log in to the Members Only section of www.batw.org and click on the drop-down menu of Member Services). Don’t forget: If you want an updated listing in the print version of the BATW directory, your profile changes should be made prior to December 15. Be sure to indicate which outlets are current (past 24 months)!

Global Winter Wonderland: Dec. 1 – Jan. 2
