"How El Rancho Saved the Day (or Night)" – by Jules Older

Here, in Jules’ own inimitable style, is the story:

Our plane to New Zealand sprang a leak. Literally. At 11 p.m.
Could have been worse. Better here at SFO than halfway across the Pacific.
But still. We trudged into the lonnnng line awaiting hotel reservations and prepared for an even lonnnnger night.
Then I remembered — El Rancho Inn in Millbrae. We’d held a BATW meeting there, and manager Art Schwass had said BATWers were welcome any time.
But does 11 p.m. count as  “any time?”
It does. We booked by phone, jumped onto the waiting shuttle, and 15 minutes later were in our room.
Next morn, we awoke refreshed and ready to fly. We were in the middle of a Mexican-style oasis, half an hour from San Francisco and 10 minutes on the free shuttle from SFO. The bed was sweet, the (also free) breakfast was fine, and the staff could not have been more helpful.
Big thanks to them, to Art… and to BATW for introducing us to El Rancho.
